How Can I Break Into the HR Career Track?

Ask a Recruiter - Jobseeker Q&A

Ask a Recruiter

Q: I want to get into HR, but I’m having trouble finding entry level HR roles. How can I break into this career track?

A: Transitioning into an entry level HR role can be challenging, especially if you don’t have the education or an HR “title” on your resume. But there are a couple of things you can do to further your chances of landing an interview.

  1. There are many online courses and certifications you can pursue during your free time, like the PSU HR certification course or the aPHR certification, which is specifically designed for people entering the HR space. Having these certifications on your resume will help you stand our from the competition — even if you don’t have HR-specific work experience. It will show initiative, and that you’re motivated to build an HR career.
  2. If you have some solid office administration experience, targeting HR Coordinator or HR Assistant positions can be a good place to start. Many of these roles list HR experience as preferred, but not required, which gives you better odds of getting your foot in the door. Highlighting skills and experiences related to strong attention to detail and confidentiality will be key when putting yourself forward for these roles.

Breaking into HR without prior experience can be hard, but persistence pays off. You’ve got this!
