Unspoken Norms in Hiring

Ask a Recruiter

Q: I’m a first generation college grad just starting to interview for jobs. What are some unspoken norms I should know about before getting too deep into the hiring process?

A: Congrats on reaching this exciting stage! Starting your first job search can be overwhelming, no matter what.

Here are a few best practices that aren’t always talked about, but can make a big difference in helping you feel confident and prepared — and make a strong impression on employers

1. Interview prep goes deeper than a Google search.

It’s not just about knowing the company’s name or reading their website. Look up the people you’ll be meeting on LinkedIn, read up on recent company news, and check out their social media.

Preparing a few “interview stories” (times you’ve solved a problem, collaborated on a project, or navigated challenges) is key. We love the STAR method for structuring your responses.

Also, have a few thoughtful questions ready to ask them — it’s a dialogue, not just a test. Asking about company culture, growth opportunities, the team you’ll be working with, expectations of the role that may not be in the job description, and why the role is open can help you determine whether or not the role will be a good match.

2. Dress the part, even remotely.

Whether it’s a virtual or in-person interview, opt for professional attire that reflects the company culture. Look for subtle clues in company photos or on their social channels to gauge how formal or laid-back they might be at work.

Even in virtual settings, make sure your background is clean, and your appearance is sharp. It shows attention to detail and respect for the process.

3. Always send a thank you note.

After the interview, send a personalized thank you note within 24 hours, whether by email or handwritten. It’s a small touch that leaves a big impression, showing that you value their time and are serious about the role.

Mention something specific from the conversation to make it stand out!

Don’t forget: if you were selected to interview for the role, they’re interested in you! The hiring process is there for both the employer and you to assess if it’s a fit.

We have more resources to demystify the job search right this way!
