What actually helps in a job search? Start by talking to everyone.
Our recruiter Sally Williams recently joined Steve Dunn & Natali Marmion on Off the Air for “How to Land the Job: Expert Career Advice (Part 2)” to talk about the job search, networking, and how to make that first connection.
Her advice? Talk to everybody.
“It could just be waiting for coffee, striking up a conversation, being human. Be curious and learn about what people do, while someone else is learning about you — and then a light bulb might go on.”
And here’s the fun part: we got to see that advice play out in real life.
Sally was also a guest on Part 1 of the podcast, which featured two young men getting ready to enter the workforce. One of them took her advice, connected with Sally, and reached out to ask about opportunities. That conversation eventually led us to placing him in a great contract role that could be a step toward the career he wants (and a great way to build real experience in the meantime).
Sometimes the next opportunity isn’t hiding in a job board. It’s hiding in a conversation.
And if you’re just getting started in your career, Part 1 is worth a listen, too. It’s a great reminder that you don’t have to have your whole career figured out before you start making connections.
We have more resources to support your job search right this way!
