Leadership for the Long Term: OPB Invests in Strategic Philanthropy
As Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) looked to reshape its development team structure, the organization saw an opportunity to bring in a senior leader who could elevate strategy, inspire innovation, and guide a high-performing fundraising team — all while staying rooted in OPB’s core mission: trusted journalism, accessible to all.
Challenge: Finding a strategic fundraising leader who could meet the moment for public media
Public media is navigating a period of rapid change, and OPB needed a leader who not only understood the shifting philanthropic landscape but could also inspire connection across Oregon and the Pacific Northwest through the power of a shared story.
This newly created position, reporting to the Chief Development Officer and Senior Vice President, would take on a critical leadership role. Key focus would include managing managing large teams, deep knowledge of principal giving, fluency in statewide donor relations, and a nimble, collaborative working style.
The right candidate would bring both deep expertise in fundraising strategy and a genuine passion for public service journalism.
Process: A collaborative and competency-based search during a time of leadership transition
Boly:Welch Executive Search partnered closely with OPB to design a thoughtful, inclusive hiring process, tailored to the organization’s evolving needs and the unique nature of the role. We worked together to refine the position description, incorporating key leadership competencies and mission alignment into every step of the search.
Working in lockstep with the Chief Development Officer out of the country during much of the process, we leaned in with structured support: developing interview rubrics, facilitating scoring conversations, and managing candidate communication and offer negotiations. Each finalist brought something distinct to the table – and together, we navigated to the best fit.
Outcome: A mission-aligned strategist joins OPB as Sr. Director of Philanthropy
In support of its statewide mission, OPB welcomed Lyndy Liersemann into a pivotal new role as Senior Director of Philanthropy.
A seasoned fundraising leader and strategic thinker, Lyndy brings a strong track record of innovation and donor engagement from her work at Mercy Corps, where she helped launch and grow the organization’s Women’s Philanthropy Group.
Lyndy had long admired OPB’s work and impact, and when this opportunity emerged, the timing was just right. With her passion for storytelling and a collaborative leadership style, she’s already making strides to support OPB’s vision and drive philanthropic growth in this new chapter.
