How Should I Navigate a Raise Conversation at My Check-In?

Ask a Recruiter

Q: My first anniversary with my company is coming up soon, and I’m wondering what I should know about having a successful anniversary check-in? I’m hoping for a raise, but am unsure how to navigate that conversation appropriately.

A: First off, congrats on your upcoming anniversary! A check-in with your manager could be a perfect time to highlight your achievements and discuss your future at the company — including a potential raise.

Start by reflecting on your contributions over the past year: what specific projects have you completed? Goals achieved? How have they positively impacted the company? Use measurable outcomes wherever possible.

Once you’ve outlined your accomplishments, come prepared to the check-in with a clear, confident ask. You might say something like, “I’ve really enjoyed my first year here, and I’m proud of the impact I’ve made, including [list specific achievements here]. Based on this, I’d like to discuss the possibility of a salary adjustment.”

Practice your pitch beforehand and be ready for various outcomes. If a raise isn’t possible right now, ask for feedback on how you can position yourself for one in the future. You might also explore alternatives like additional vacation time or development opportunities.

Most importantly, stay professional and positive, and focus on how your contributions align with the company’s goals. Best of luck!
